Broken timing belt

HELLO FELLOW JEEP OWNERS, I HAVE A 2003 JEEP WRANGLER TJ 2.4 THAT I JUST RECIEVED AS A GIFT. TIMING BELT BROKE 125 MILES AWAY FROM HOME, I CALLED A JEEP DEALERSHIP NEARBY, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS SPECIFIC MOTOR IS AN INTERFEARANCE MOTOR, WITH THAT BEING SAID HE TOLD ME THAT MORE THAN LIKELY I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE HEAD CHECKED AND MORE THAN LIKELY I BENT VALVES, IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO HIS STATEMENTS. AND HE TOLD ME I WOULD ALSO HAVE TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A JEEP SO I AM UNSURE, AND WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY USEFUL INFORMATION BEFORE SPENDING A TON OF MONEY.THANKS

It is a non interference engine. And the timing belt drives the water pump. The 1.8 and 2.0 of this family of engines is interference, but the 2.4 is not.

I have an 2004 2.4 TJ and I had my timing belt replaced a few months ago. At first the mechanic at the shop told me he thought it was an interference engine only to find out he was wrong. I had no clue at the time but this website also helped me with that.

If you buy a used Jeep with over a 100K on it, is it recommended to change the belt if you don't have a repair history? it can't be cheap.

Man it's hard to tell. I don't know why any engine manufacturer would put a 'timing belt' on a engine, if it's not replaced about ever 50-60k miles it's going to destroy your engine. You may be lucky if the Dealer doesn't find more wrong internally. You could fix it at home if you can work on an engine. It sure would be cheaper that way.

My local Jeep dealership wanted $700 to replace the timing belt.
Too bad it's far from home or you could get a trusted shop to do. I got mine done for $365.

How was it? Did you find any other problems?
