Burning Oil?

Ok I got an 06 Wrangler with the 2.4L. Awhile back I posted a question about an intermintant lifter noise. I've got 39k on the Jeep. Now I have done my 2nd oil change both in 3k intervals everything has been good but on my 2nd oil change I notice I've come up 2qts low. Am I burning? any1 know why? In the last 3k I have ben up on the trails 3 different times would that contribute?
