Amy you see where we ended up in 1 hour? anyhow back to the burning part.. perhaps you had some work done and some 1 forgot or dropped something in there? My first gues would be glazed belt. Any coolant around the bottom? I when my radiator died the burning coolant did smell a bit rubbery so..

Nope, no work. I changed the oil a couple hundred miles ago and added coolant about two weeks ago. No leaks.

Yup, Triple88a, as bad as my kids.

Hey, Tiny, any smokers been inside your jeep lately? The reason I ask is, back when my husband smoked, he was driving my jeep and missed the ashtray without realizing it. For days I smelled a burned/melted rubber smell and couldn't find a mechanical problem. Then I found the butt and the burned spot on the carpet tucked under the floor mat.

Just a though if you can't find anything else.

Damn, I should log on at night. I'm missing all of the fun around here. Personally I think we should all join up on the honda forum and start talking jeeps to see how long it takes us to get banned.

Tiny, you mentioned there's some oil or grease residue on your valve cover? You might check your PCV Valve right on top of the valve cover. It if it's loose oil can/will leak out of there and cause the smell you are having.

OK -- I have a theory.

If there's no source under the hood for the smell and you checked the exhaust I'm begining to suspect another two possible areas:

Three areas, actually.

First (lowest probability of being the cause) -- are you SURE the smell is the smell of burning oil? Is it possible it's an electrical component or wire melting or burnung? That could occur under the dash and seem like it's coming from the engine. Everything kosher with the electrical controls and features?

Second -- Was there any service done to the car before the smell appeared? ANY parts changed out?

Was your clutch serviced? (it is a standard, right?) Have you confirmed no oil droplets under the engine (I'm thinking main engine seal leak getting slung on the clutch). Any change in clutch grip or driveability in general?

Oh! I just LOVE a mystery....

It's definitely from under the hood. But, I cleaned the..... manifold whatchamacallit and the smell was less, but still there and strongish when I first turn the beastie off.

It's a brand new Jeep, got it in March..... no, it's auto. I was yelled at while I learned to drive standard and now have a permanent twitch when I drive one.

Are you sure it isn't just oil on the manifold? Did you change your oil recently?

Yelled at?! Don't make me write a Top 10 list of things to say to people who yell at you. I'll do it. Don't get me started. Nobody should be yelling at you.

Smack 'em.

Aim for the front teeth.

Backhand smacks are also acceptable.

Anyway, you have introduced new information that drastically changes the diagnosis vector. This is a NEW Jeep. And the smell is strongest when the car is turned off. Interesting.

In my humble opinion, the smell increases when the engine is shut down because the radiator fan and other rotating components are stopped. Those things move and mix air around diluting the smoke. Also (and to a lesser extent) - if something is generating smoke, having the engine running might lessen the severity of the smell because the engine will ingest some of the smoke though the air intake.

I strongly suspect that the source of the smoke is something spilled on the engine or exhaust. In any case, since it is a new Jeep, you should have no (zero, nada) oil on your valve cover. In Philadelphia, a dealer would definitely get smacked for selling a car with a valve cover gasket that leaks, or for oil spilled on the engine.

Tiny -- I need you to look again but try to look at the VERY back of the engine. You'll have to lay down over the engine to see that far back but try to see BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE FIREWALL. Also, and this is crucial, if your engine is so dirty (with oil or otherwise) that there is any doubt whatsoever as to what you're seeing, have the dealer clean the compartment. Better still, have someone competent clean it. That will require steam cleaning by someone who knows how to protect the vital parts. This is cruicial because a dirty engine will not allow you to spot leaks or other problems; it causes the engine to run slightly hotter; dirt invites more dirt; it (especially oil) can foul electrical conections; it makes mainenace a pain because everything is dirty, it can attack the finish of parts reducing the resale value of the car, and worst of all, it violates my personal rule that engines should be clean enough that a sandwich dropped on the engine is a better eat than one dropped on the floor.


The other thing here is that cleaning the engine compartment provides a control, as we say in experiment design. If the smoke was caused by a one-time event such as a mechanic spilling hair styling gel on a hot part, the problem will go away and stay solved. If, however, something is indeed a continuing fault (like a bad valve cover gasket allowing oil to leak) you will see a fresh and obvious new pattern of oil dispersal. Like footprints in a newly fallen snowfield.

Hey Tiny, have you thought about the whole electric car thing? Your Jeep is new. Before you hit your 100,000 mile mark, a big percentage of cars on the road will be electric. How's that going to feel? We're driving gasoline cars and around us there are all of these electric cars.

What do you do? Sell you Jeep? You'll take a huge loss. Keep driving it? Gas prices will be $5/gallon.

I always thought when that day comes, some smart person will sell aftermarket electric engines that can be swapped with gasoline engines. Imagine that. An electric Jeep! Quiet, no oil burinng. The only sound being tires and wind noise.

So the question is -- will JC Whitney sell noise generators for electric cars to make them sound cool?

Oh, then that's end game as we say in chess. If the only thing that has changed since before the smell appeared and you now having to suffer through these posts is that you changed the oil then your issue is almost certainly a little spilled oil.

Wipe the engine down a tad more and check that your filter is tight. I worked on cars for 25 years before I broke down and bought a squadron of funnels. One for every occassion. Everybody should have a funnel. Great stocking stuffer and protects against oil spills.

Oh by the way Tiny, recheck your oil level. It's anal, but make sure it's not overfilled. We've all done that.

The engine is pretty clean actually, just the oil on the valve cover (which I did not spill and cleaned up today). Smell comes on worse when I'm going up a steep grade.

I ain't selling my Jeep. Ever. I'd rather set it in the front yard and fill it with water for the birds.

I check my oil everytime I fill up (which is all the freaking time), but I'll check the filter. I can barely reach it so it was tough to put on, maybe I didn't tighten it enough.

What's a steep grade? Is that like one of thos off roady type phrases?

Yikes -- changes when the car is pointed upward. Engine is clean. Wow! This is a real conundrum. If I had to guess now, wildly guess, I might add, I'd say it has to do with oil quantity -- as in the block is overfilled -- but even that shouldn't result in smoke.

If you had a leak and the leaked oil puddles, then when you change attitude the oil goes with gravity and finds a hot part to cook off on that would correlate with the symptoms but that would be a bizarre corner case, as we say in computer debugging.

Jeez -- how about this Tiny -- I'm going to cook up some popcorn and read this thread to see how this mystery pans out!
