Can't get a full tank of gas

Whenever I go to fill up my 99 TJ, the fuel gauge almost never goes all the way up. It usually stops filling at about 3/4 - 7/8 tank. It has hit the full mark maybe twice since I bought it in January. I have a family member who had a problem with their Nissan that some sensor went out on their car and they could only put in like $2 worth of gas before the gas pump started automatically clicking off. Any ideas or does this ring a bell?

It seems like it is not filling all the way up instead of being something wrong with the gauge itself.

Pretty sure all tjs do this, i normally pull the nozzle almost all the way out and continue pouring, then when it stops i just feather the tirgger it for like two more gallons till it drips out haha, then the gauge goes past the full mark.

That's odd... never had that issue before. Maybe the hose to the tank that allows the fuel vapor to vent (controlling the auto shutoff?) is kinked and it's causing it to shut off too early?

i've never had an issue with filling the tank, if anything the needle goes past the full mark.

Mine stops at 3/4 full too.
I have to do the same as Theo to get a full tank.
It's kind of annoying.
Not nearly as annoying as literally watching the needle drop on my way home though. lol.

It happens with mine but only at certain stations. I think it has more to do with how the nozzle on the pump fits over the filler neck. Either I just inch it out or twist the handle to the left and right until it begins to pump smoothly. I can pretty much tell by the gallons shown on the pump if it is full or not.
