Cat is rattling

My exhaust is rattling bc it sounds like the cat has a piece loose in it. Like maybe the catalyst that's in there broke off and just bouncing around. Sounds terrible. I checked underneath by hitting the exhaust with my fist and heard it rattling. Anyone ever had this problem? What's the easiest way to get that off there I don't have anything to cut it out and never had any luck with exhaust bolts. Trying to keep from taking it to a shop but think I might have to. Plus you guys think I should just replace cat or just shake loose stuff out

Either replace the cat, or remove it and take a large long screw driver or whatever will fit in it and a BFH and just bust it all up and empty it out and bolt it back up - Done

The only fix is to have the catalytic converter replaced. Gutting it will just cause a Check Engine Light.

Isn't it illegal to remove or tamper with the cat?
I had the same trouble with my broken cat.
When you hear that noise, the cat is broken inside, and like Jerry said,
it must be replaced.

Your engine performance will definitely suffer.
I was getting high revs, engine check light, vehicle stalling, and I couldn't drive over 35-40 MPH.
My auto transmission was performing horribly. It didn't want to shift gears.
I replaced the cat and my Jeep was very happy. No more such problems.

So-called "high flow" cats don't help the Wrangler's performance in the least. That's a bunch of overstated hype propagated by the catalogs & magazines.

The broken pieces of the cat will eventually plug the cat or will work their way down to your muffler and plug it up then you won't have any power followed by you asking why I have no power in my Jeep. Take care of it now before it gets worse.
Rockauto has replacement exhaust parts for a pretty good price.

Common issue on TJs, I just had mine replaced this summer by a local exhaust shop - cost me less than $250, IIRC.

Common issue with Jeeps period in the TJ year range. My best friend has either work at or own a muffler shop for the last 25 years and he said the factory cats had that issue. Mine rattled when I got it and had almost clogged my muffler. I cut it loose, gutted it, and had a borla ss muffler welded on and love it. No power loss, no funny idle, check engine light is a positive. I couldn't believe the power difference after the clogged exhaust was gone. You can get a cat from Summit of Jegs for like $80 and most shops charge about 20-40 to install. Thats my suggestion is to replace it but I kinda get cheap sometimes.......and my inspection guy takes care of me also.

Oh yeah, common problem on TJ's. I ordered a replacement cat and exhaust from Summit. Figured if I would replace all the exhaust since it was pretty rusty. PB Blaster on the exhaust bolts made easy removal.
