what you are trying to do is getting the dash out of the way so you can remove the heater plenum box. When i did my 2001 last year I just loosened the steering column,I did'nt unplug all the electrical connections on the drivers side, just unbolted the dash and raised it up with a strap & hung it from the roll's a little tricky but I didn't have any problems except finding a heater core that fit! Some of the aftermarket cores don't have the inlet tubes bent correctly

I just helped a friend do his a few weeks ago and I did mine last weekend. You do not have to remove the steering wheel. Just drop it out of the way by removing the 2 bolts under the dash. You can move the dash back out of the way once the steering wheel is dropped. I did not disconnect any of the electrical connectors on the driver side. I angled the dash on the passenger side out of the way with the driver side resting on the steering wheel column. It helps to have someone there to move the dash back when you are pulling the air box.

Aftermarket heater cores are hit or miss with fit. The first Spectra Premium my friend bought fit perfectly. I had to buy and return 4 different Spectra Premium heater cores before finding one that fit perfectly. The final one I bought went in good.

I'd also take a very good look at your A/C evaporator if you have one. It might be worth replacing if it is the original one since you will have the air box out.
