Check engine code 43...

So I have a 1997 Jeep wrangler 4.0L Sahara.. It has 71,500 miles on it.. i've only had it since June 10th of this year.. Ive only put 4000 miles on it since i got it. I got in it today started her up and I could hear a slight backfire when i gave it gas. The Jeep drove fine the whole time, for about 50 mile round trip. half way back the check engine light began to flash and the stay on.. I was on the highway going 65-80 with no problems.. but at lights startup was sorta sluggish and maintaining speed was more difficult then normal as well.. I just had the oil changed about 2000 miles ago. Im not sure what other work was done to it prior to my buying the car, but as far as visuals go its stock, but it does have a transmission oil cooler.. can some one please help me!!!! Thanks

A 43 (misfire) code in a '97 or '98 TJ is generally going to be caused by a bad batch of valve springs some 4.0L engines got in those years. Replacing the spark plugs, rotor, distributor cap, fuel injectors, etc. won't help.

The only way to fix that problem is with a fresh set of valve springs and, possibly, a valve job too since the weak valve springs will eventually burn the valves or valve seats too. Jeep has a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this issue which basically just says to replace the springs. A TSB isn't free to have done by the dealer, it's not the same as a Recall which is free due to it being safety related.

And welcome to WF!

When you have a choice, buy American.
