check engine code check?

Isnt it true that the 1999 wrangler doesnt let you see the code if you do the code test trick with the ignition? My check engine light just came on. I am within 200 miles of a scheduled oil change... could that be the reason?

No, needing an oil change will not cause the CEL to come on. If it did it would be a big money maker to reset it. Go to an autoparts store and have them pull the codes. It's usually free because they want you to but parts from them. I have my own since I have 5 cars in the family and going to the autoparts store is a hassle.

its sad but true

If you are talking about turning the key like 5 times and watching the check engine light to blink that only worked in the yj's an xj that i owned. x1 for having the parts store check it out.

It worked on my 06 TJ when my CEL came on and CAT needed replacing. I forget the steps, and had to do it a couple of times for it to work, but it came up for me by just turning the key. If you do a search you'll probably find the steps and can give it a try before trying the auto supply place.

For sure this doesn't work on '98 TJs but it may work on your '99. Definitely it works on '97 and newer than '99 TJs. Simply turn the ignition switch On-Off-On three times within five seconds then leave it in the On position. Don't turn it to Start, just to the On position. Then have patience, it takes a while for the diagnostics to finish & any codes present to show up in the odometer display.

Is there a list available somewhere of the "codes"?
If I was to go out and perform this procedure, without my engine light being on, could it still give me a code?
Just curious.

Not all stored codes that can be displayed give a CEL. Earlier TJs will always give at least the '55' (end of codes code), I'm not sure if the newer TJs that give a Pnnnn will always give at least one code or not, try it & tell us what happens.

I pulled this procedure just now, with no engine light issues, and it stated "done" and then went right to my odometer reading.
This is on an 02 Sport.

If no codes are stored, that's what you get. Same on my '05
