Check engine light

My Check engine light popped on the other day, 4.0liter. Code at parts store says EVAP, that is so generic I dunno where to begin.

Mines on too, I did the gas cap and the control thing under the hood.

Any other guesses? I hear the canister if it's bad is unavailable.

What is the actual code? Could be anything from a small pin hole leak to purge solenoids not working properly.

It's a bitch to find. so many areas for leaks. I did the gas cap and that did not fix. I then went to a friends place and had a smoke machine hooked up and saw that a connector from a plastic line from the fuel pump to a hard line on the frame was cracked so that was removed and we spliced it in. That did not work so more smoke and found that same line had cracks near the fuel pump. Had to drop the tank and as of this time I am waiting for a replacement line from the dealer ($60). Then we will do more smoke and hopefully it will be fixed.

Which code? "EVAP" is not a code definition. It could be a lot of stuff. Find out exactly which code.

All TJs are OBDII-equipped and the code will read off as "Pxxxx" with the X's being a four digit number. My EVAP code was P1494, which means "Leak Detection Pump (LDP) pressure switch problem - electrical or the pump itself." Knowing the exact code and what it indicates will save you a lot of time in your search.

Here are all of the OBDII codes the CEL can warn you about, including the EVAP ones.
