Check engine light

I have a 2001 Sahara and the check engine light comes on. I read this happens frequently but i dont know how to turn it off. Do I have to go to a dealer? Please give me some advise

Stop by an Auto Zone or some place that has a code reader. They will give you a P number. Post up that P number and I can help you diagnose why your CEL. You can get rid of it the right way.

Yup, What Clifford said. They will hook up the scanner for free for you.

Often, the Check Engine light illuminates due only to a minor momentary glitch somewhere. Like a loose gas cap or similar minor problem. The light can be turned off and the stored codes cleared by disconnecting the battery for a minute or two. The light will then be off. If the light turns back on, then it's time to have the code retrieved which can point you towards the possible problem.

Most Check Engine lights are not serious.
