check engine light

My check engien light came on I think it was just the gas cap. But i'm trying to find how to get the computer to display he codes. I tried the on and off with the key didn't work. Tried holding the trip button ond turning the key on all it does is run a test on the dash. Also if i hold the trip button and turn the key to off it shows 2.4 is this the software version? I have a 99 sahara.

Sorry but the technique of turning the ignition key on-off-on three times within five seconds won't work for you '99 TJ. There are a few model years of TJs where that won't work and you're right in the middle of those years.

The only way you can get your own diagnostic codes is with a plug-in diagnostic code reader like is sold by any autoparts store. I even think Harbor Freight Tools has them for a cheap price.

All you had to do was go to autozone they check codes for free.

Why don't you kill 2 birds with one stone and invest abit on the performance with a Hypertech Programmer and with that you can also read codes?

$300 for a hypertech to basically only advance the ignition timing, calibrate the speedometer, and read the codes is pretty darned expensive. I used to use Hypertechs to program Ford and Chevy truck chips I had my guys customize for dealers but it really didn't do much beyond calibrating the speedometer after installing 35/37" tires. With years of experience installing and programming Hypertech progrmmers, that would be the last thing I would install onto my TJ.
