check engine light and noise

Yesterday my check engine light came on and I noticed that when I accelerate that I hear a metallic rattling sound under my 98 TJ. I checked the fluid levels and nothing is wrong there and all the guages look ok. The engine seems to running strong. I looked underneath and at first glance I don't see anything that appears to be loose. Any ideas?

I have about 139,000 miles on the Jeep.

Thanks!

A Check Engine light is normally associated with non-serious issues that are often smog system related. It's the Check Gauges light that is bright red that gets my undivided attention.

Thanks. That makes sense. It seems like years ago I had a Camaro that did that and it was the catalytic converter. I guess I'll run it by the shop tommorrow and get it checked out.

It ended up being an O2 sensor and a hole in the muffler. Thanks for the help guys. You were all helpful like usual, that's what is so good about this forum.
