I have an 2004 Wrangler and my check engine light came on. Stopped by the local Autozone and they plugged in thier computerizer and said it was my battert temp sensor?
Has anyone ever heard of this before? And where is it located?
The battery temperature sensor is mounted directly underneath the battery. If it's showing the battery is getting too warm, that should be checked into right away. A hot battery can be caused by being charged too rapidly to having shorted cells.
Hi Jerry,
Sorry to bother you, I hope you and your family are well and safe.
Quick question related to battery temperature sensor.
I have a Jeep TJ 2006 4.0 Automatic.
I recently changes the PCM, new PCM was from a 2005 TJ but we reprogrammed it to my VIN, SKIM and flashed it with latest updates for my car model.
after 30 miles drive code P0517 appeared (battery temp sensor)
when i took it to my garage, it appeared that there is no battery temp sensor existing, even the harness where it should be located is not there.
I checked the manual for the 2006 model and i couldn't find a Battery temperature sensor either !!!
Do you have any idea if the battery temperature sensor came for the 2006 TJ models, mine is GULF import.
they aren't that uncommon to go bad and turn on the cel. also common for someone to be in there working on something and disconnect it and forget about it, or even more common is people get p.o'ed trying to disconnect it and it gets damaged. it can cause some weird running and electrical problems from that little sensor.
Not to mention a missing battery temp sender could cause the alternator to charge the battery too hard/too fast & cause the battery to overheat & potentially come apart (explode). The PCM uses the info from that sender to control how fast the alternator charges the battery so problems like that don't happen.
Thanks Guys, I will check it out. I removed the battery to replace the fender, and I do remember plugging it back in. Who knows maybe I forgot to plug it in. I will check it out and let you know.
AH HA, I found the problemo...... I didn't have the connector pushed all the way in until it clicked. I pulled out the battery and started to check the wires and the connector and when I pulled on the connector it just pulled apart. Put it back together and this time it "clicked" and the check engine light is now off.
This is scary. It makes Jeep owner's look like bigots. Has anyone here even checked out the past Presidents. To think that you picked this one to make such a remark about really shows a nasty side. One that doesn't make me proud. As people like you have said to me in the past, "If you don't like it, Pick another country and MOVE!" He is YOUR President, so get over it.
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."

You just chose to revive an old thread to comment about a respected member's signature? Wow.
By the way, I didn't vote for Obama...and he is NOT my president. I will not bow down to him, salute him, or shake his hand. And do you know why? Because this is America and I have that freedom, unless he and his crazy liberal administration try to take it away. Don't like it? Tough.
Just quick note for anyone. This batter temp sensor can cause the engine light to come on and throw cam/crank sensor problem. I have been chasing this for better part of 1 year. whenever I would go over hard bump is when this happened. I was pulling it all apart today and I saw the battery tray was pinching the wiring and causing a short. the wire was split causing a faulty ground. I chose to replace the whole sensor. This must be the ground for the cam sensor and the fuel system because when the fuel would get to e-line...the check engine light would go off. The car drove fine except when I would go over hard bumps causing this short and I would jiggle some wires and tada...no check engine light and it would be fine again...until another bump. LOL Today I finally found that root cause. stupid battery temp sensor...Chrysler is bunch of foolish engineers. The cam sensor will tell engine not to start ...so because this sensor is on same circuit as the battery temp sensor...the ECU thought it was problem with the cam sensor....thus disabling the engine start.
As far as I can tell (have read & also it is not seen in the ’06 FSM, as you say) the ‘06s did not have the battery temp sensor (possible some early ones had a carryover from 2005). The ‘05s did have them, mine included. Since you now have a 2005 PCM I’m guessing it is looking for that sensor’s input. Not finding one it sets the code.
Thanks for your input,
I believe so, some members suggested i simply ignore it, but i am thinking of installing one, need to check the wiring diagram as the wiring harness is not existing in my car.
The ‘05s used pin 32 of the C-3 (natural colored) connector which should be an open space on your ’06. That will require you to find a locking terminal to fit the opening to plug the new wire into. The other wire goes to the sensor ground which you can pick up from & tap into any of the various sensors which use a dark blue/dark green wire. The cam sensor might be a good place to get that since it runs in the same general area as the battery sensor.
Here are the pages from the FSM for both ’05 & ’06. You can see the blank space in the ’06 where the sensor would be (compared to the ’05). The '05 is on top.
As others said 2006 didn't come with a battery temperature sensor but it's clear the 05 PCM you installed is looking for it. I'd wire one in like suggested above.
Getting a wire to fit a connector spot in a NGC PCM connector should be rear easy just get a pigtail (connector with short wires) from any similar Chrysler product all 04-05 PT cruisers use same PCM connectors
Then either splice in an actual sensor or put in a resistor with resistance in normal temp range
Thanks to all for all the help and advise.
I will be wiring one shortly for my 06 TJ.
I did order a PCM for a 2006 from eBay, but with current conditions it’s been a month and tracking shows still in transit.. e-commerce cheap shipping.
So I came across an 05 PCM and a DRB 3. And that’s that.
Honestly, the 05 PCM solved many problems which I previously had, especially in the SKIM.
As my gauges will never move when I switch the key to on position. And sentry key icon will illuminate, but when I crank. Car would start no problem, and key light will go.
No one was able to pin point where the problem was.
With the new 05 PCM, the issue I see gone. And so am extremely happy with it.
I believe that problem might have been from the PCM.
Once I receive the other PCM I ordered, I will test it to make sure it is working and keep it as a spare.. I will be running the 05 on my car as I am extremely satisfied with it and the programming.
Not an emulator, we programmed the PCM using a real DRB3. I do not own it, it belongs to a friend’s friend.
But I am into the market of buying one.
I’ve seen used ones in good condition going for around 2500 USD.
In the whole country where I live, that is the only guy who has it, took me 2 months to arrange getting it from him, during which I bought another PCM from States, through ebay from arestechnologies, (I am still waiting for it to arrive (e-commerce shipping)).
Ares claims they use a real DRB 3 and a simulator vehicle, will see when I receive their part how it performs .. but so far communication with them was easy and their customer care is excellent. I’ve read very bad reviews about many other companies offering ECM programming.
In UAE even the Jeep service center are not using a DRB 3 anymore. I guess because it only works for old Chrysler’s up to 07 or 09 models (not sure). And no one cares for old cars or service them anymore, unlike in States, where People rebuild all type of jeeps from CJ’s up to the latest models and modify them.
On another note..
Jerry, Rubi4, digger.
Thank you all for all the support and help..
The battery temp sensor was installed today, drove the car for 20 miles, engine check light is gone, car ride is so smooth.
Stay safe and cool guys.
Thanks for the follow up. Good info. This may help others searching here.
