Check engine light Help

I have a 99 tj.Just got a check engine light.I t would be great if someone can help me retrieve the code number from the dash .Tried to do the reset key thing but it didnt show any codes.any help would be great.

Has to be read with an OBD II code reader… key trick won't work on your 99 and holding in the odometer reset only does an instrument cluster check.

Any performance issues? My hunch is that it is probably the cat. It's glass inside, and after 14 years, its probably broken inside. It's probably gone or getting ready to go. But, you definitely need that code. If the code has anything to do with the exhaust system, I would bet money its the cat.

Well, just hop in the Jeep and run down to Advance, AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc.
They'll check your codes for free, and even give you a list of probable causes.

And a note, a code is just telling you what part of the system is acting up, not always the part.
