Check Engine light will Not blink Code

Fixed a vacuum leak that was preventing my AC/Heater from directing air anywhere besides my defrost vent. Air blows great, but immediately when I started the Jeep up the check engine light came on. Now my Check Engine light is funny..when I turn the key 3 times it will never blink a code, it remains constant. I had this same problem when I tried to diagnose the last issue. Any idea why the code will not blink or why the Check Engine light came on? Did the previous owner buy a computer from China?

My 2000 will not blink the code or show it in the odometer. I have to use a code reader. Hope this helps.

Only the '97 Tj will blink a code like this, you need a code reader for anything above '97.

97-06, there is only one year (forget which Jerry has posted it) that will not show the code. All others will. My 03 does.

Yeah, the 97 blinks and above wont...you'll need an OBDII reader for it. Just go to advance or autozone and you'll be good to go

My '02 blinks the code. Maybe try slowing-down the ignition turn-on/off sequence. It worked great for me and it was a vacuum leak causing an improper idle, or similar wording. Idle RPM was higher than target and fixing the problem (plugging the line where the vacuum canister for cruise-control would be) turned the light off and allowed my vents to work.

Good luck.

Mines a '98 and it won't. Code readers are cheap and are a very handy tool to have, saves you from running to an auto parts store to have your codes read and cleared or having to piss around with the ignition, just buy one.

You mean it's too much work to turn the key in your ignition?

May I ask how you start your Jeep on a normal day??? lol

My 02 does it... put key in ignition, turn on, off, on, off, on...leave it on and let it do it's thing. Copy down codes as it spits them out. Don't try to do it as fast as possible... take your time and don't start it, only turn ignition on. There are 1 or 2 years where it doesn't work...if it's like my old Dodge Dakota, 98's couldn't use the ignition trick but most of the others could. Don't get me wrong, code readers are nice...especially when you fix the problem and want to clear the code asap to see if it'll return, but they're also much more of a hassle than using the ignition trick. Gotta plug em in...kick the ignition on...let them sit there and scan...yada yada...ignition trick, turn key a few times and it spits out codes.

It will show your codes providing you do it right. Turn the key on-off-on (not to start) three times within five seconds and then leave it in the on position. Wait... give it sufficient time as the codes don't show up right away. Within 5 or so additional seconds, you'll see any codes present start to appear on the odometer. If you did it right, you will always at least get the normal '55' code which only says no more codes follow. Plus the Check Engine light will blink the codes out too... like the 55 code you seen in the odometer will also cause the CEL to blink five times, pause, then blink five more times.
