I'll swap out those and hopefully it fixes the problem. Going to check all the bolts under the body while i have it on stands too, just to see if anything is being screwie.
You probably need to replace all your u-joints since your in a northern climate as a preventative measure

yeah i ordered ujoints for both the front and rear driveshafts and will pick up a replacement for the double cardan ball joint from NAPA and replace them all. If the chirp doesnt go away after that i'll take it to a shop and have them tell me whats wrong cause i'd be mostly out of ideas. not to mention it's been chirping so long it will piss me off if it's not the ujoints lol

I also have an annoying squeak. It doesn't always happen though. I can drive two or three time and then the fourth time it will start squeaking. The faster I go the faster it gets. And when I break it goes away. I also need new break pads. Could that be a reason?

No I didnt get axle ujoints. I hope the rear drive shaft is the problem, because the current joints look so bad. If it doesnt fix the problem the axle joints is probably my next step.

Just for S&G's check out this TSB about "chirping" from Chrysler on the 03 - 06 L4 2.4L models. (not sure what engine you have) I just found out about this yesterday from another guy on here who emailed me the TSB# and I looked it up on my AllData account. This was a reoccurring problem on my Jeep (2.4L) and has been driving me crazy since I owned it. In fact I'm doing the change today!

Took care of my front shaft today. Replaced all 3 joints, CV over haul and lubed everything the way it should be and bada bing...done and done.

Not only did it fix the noise but apparently that was clutch chatter I was having from a stop and my locker wasnt clunking when I shifted...it was this sloppy ass stock CV joint.

This should help if you wanna do it your self. I followed it.

I've replaced my belt, idler and auto tensioner already. I have a 4.0.

I've taken the wheels off and everything is tight with no wiggle or slop. My u-joints should be in on tuesday and hopefully the weather stays agreeable so i can get the joints changed out soon after and i'll go from there.

Same problem?

I have a squealing like this too, took it to the dealer, got boned on the serpentine belt ($147 for something easy to do and only $30), went away for a couple days, came back. Then after it came back (in every gear, although more predominant in low gears) the heat completely gave out one day. The heat is back now, and the squealing is gone for now too. But I don't really know if its the U-joints that need to be replaced or what.

On a side note, is that recall for the 4.0L too? Just got mine last month and didn't think about looking into that.

I pretty much resigned to the fact this was going to less than Caddy quite, but I have one gnarly chirp. Mine will not occur until having driven it a while. Braking, coasting, accelerating...does not affect it.

I'm questioning something that would be actually warming up as the engine warms up.

Anyone find an engine mount to be the problem?

I wan gonna say u-joints, but if it stops when you press the brake, sounds like a caliber issue....

so the finale of my chirping...

I finally got the spicer 1310s I have been waiting on. Last night I pulled the rear drive shaft and started pressing out the u-joints that were pictured above. Holy cow what a pita they were. I had to lay the press and drive shaft on the ground and stand on the bar to get it to move a few times they were so rusted in. I used a clamp style ujoint/ball joint press and i have no idea if anything else could have broken them free. Got everything apart and went in for the night. Being Alaska it got dark just before 4pm, working in a carport and i dont have a work light yet, its now on the list. In the morning everything went back together like butter and the chirp is completely gone. I looked more closely at the old ujoints and not only did they rattle back and forth when they were in the drive shaft but there are no needle bearings to speak of. They were completely gone and the grease was a black/silver gross color. I'm glad the squeak is gone and enjoy that i've learned a new skill. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

If it makes the noise while on stands, use a 1/4 inch long fuel-type hose with one side on your best ear, and the other tip to sneak the noise generator. It works wonderful for pinpointing noises. You will only hear whats close to the tip of the hose.

Does anyone have a video of this sound. I am chasing a similar chirp/squeak type sound. It only happens when the Jeep is cold. Once I drive for a few miles it goes away. It is not related to the engine because I can push in the clutch and rev the engine while coasting and it doesn't change the frequency. I have an 03 Rubicon with 129xxx miles.

Have you pulled your drive shafts and checked the ujoints for wiggle/slop? When my rear drive shaft was on it had no wiggle but the second i pulled it i could it had a half inch of slop and the seals fell out. I would check the joints. My chirp started out like you say yours is, when it was cold and only here and there, then it progressed into chirping for a couple days then not for a week. no harm in checking

lol just a little bit though, it's a great tip, ill add that to the tool box for the next problem would have saved me a lot of time in the first place. Before even checking the ujoints i replaced the serpentine belt, idler pully and auto tensioner because i had never heard bad ujoints before just squeeky belts. oh well just dont have to mess with those for a while lol

I'm glad you got it figured out! We both learned the same thing at the same time, diff shafts lol.

On a side note ever since I started wheeling a lifted jeep I learned that when I hear a squeal or rattled type noise I grease and check all joints and everything with a fitting first. Esp since I wheel in a lot of sand and muddy areas. I learned this after a lot of stress and time wasted. If that's not it I just pray its not another differential issue. Lol

Thanks for posting this TSB. Only had my 04 2.4 for a few months. Already was about to buy second belt and tensioner, although nothing i could find wrong. Took this TSB to advance they couldn't cross it to a dayco belt but could to the cheaper ones. Working great thank you.

I have not yet. I wasn't even sure where to start looking. I'll pull the drive shafts this weekend and see what the u-joints look like.

I did get under there when I first bought it and greased everything. The rear drive shaft had greasable joints, but the front didn't. that leads my to believe one of them has been replaced.

Should have PM'd me! For future reference:

Belt: Gates Micro V-AT K060960

Idler pulley: Gates 38006

BTW, other than stuff on sale, fluids, wipers, etc., I rarely get "actual" parts from Autozone. I find most of their stuff to be crap. We have two really good parts stores here that sell mostly quality American made parts AND have an unbelievable knowledgeable staff (many of which are motor-heads, Jeepers, or stock car racers.)

If you ever want to cross reference a part#, here's a link to one of the stores:
http://www.lacavaandsowersby.com/

There is a guest login halfway down the page. Click on the "tools" tab and click the "interchange" link. Enter the part # (I find that Chrysler parts you have to drop the first digit sometimes) and it will give you a cross to all the popular brands. I love this site because it's the stores real time inventory & part location. I can pre-order all my parts and they'll have them on the counter when I come in.

So it is snow season here in Buffalo and my girl has taken command of the Jeep. About a month ago she tells me there is a little squeek... I drove it yesterday and it is unbearable!!! It has got to be a u-joint. People don't get the love affair we have with our rigs, I have a laundry list of upkeep planned over the next year and if this were any other vehicle, I would have already set it on fire.
