Cig Lighter Broken

Trying to fix the last thing in my 2000 TJ that doesn't work, which is the cigarette lighter. Would really like to charge my cell phone or be able to use the GPS...anyways, I've tried practically everything. The fuses for it in the dash and under the hood look good. I've taken the dash off and tried wiggling the cords around the lighter, I've cleaned out the cigarette lighter, ect. Is there anything I'm missing that could be the problem?

Try probing around with a test light. Wouldn't hurt to try a different fuse because.ive had blown fuses that don't look blown

I tried playing around with the box in the dash, I swapped out one that I knew worked into the #19 box...but nothing.

cig lighter only works when the jeep is on. Is your jeep on?

Try connecting test light to positive then ground it. See if you've got voltage. If you do then its probably a bad ground if I had to guess

I had a 2000 sahara, cig. lighter in that never worked at all, but the aux. power receptacle did...never did figure it out.
2003 Rubicon-works fine but never got the cig. lighter with it-figured it was power outlet
anyways and that's all it's used for...cellphone charger!

There are two wires going to the cig lighter on my 03. One is black with white stripe. That's ground. The other is light blue with white stripe, that's positive.

If you've got a test light ground that on the metal behind /under the dash. Turn stick the other end into the positive wire. If the light goes on you've got power , probably means the ground is bad

If the grounds bad it just means the wire isn't connected properly to the ground (frame of jeep) . I'm not sure where the ground ground ill take a look in my Hayes manual

There's a fuse under the hood labeled accessories 1 . It's 40amps check that one ( just switch one of the other 40 amp ones and test the cig lighter.(jeep has to be on)

Hmm first it would be helpful to know if its a bad ground or not. Could be the hot side. Do you have a test light?.

Like this. Ground the hook end onto a ground that ground is under the steering wheel but any will work. And on the other end probe into the blue and white stripe wire coming from the cig lighter.

If it lights up that means you're getting power to the cig lighter. That means no fuses are blown and there is an issue with the ground. If it doesn't like up then you've got fuse issues ( or relay issues). Make sure when you test the jeep is on

Thank for the pictures. Will a regular voltage reader work?

If you can check your multimeter ( volt checker) on something else first like your battery to make sure it's working. Because I'm assuming your not using a fluke and I don't either.. Its just good to know it's working

Well, I checked out the voltmeter on a battery and it worked just fine. On my cigarette lighter, nothing. No power at all. Damn fuses.

Make sure you press in hard enough to go through the wire insulation, if you did then and got no volts then there is a fuse problem or relay problem .

I'm sure you checked the fuses like ten times already. So its prolly the relay.

What the relay does is act like a automatic switch. When your key is not in it turns itself off. As soon as you put the key in and turn the jeep on it opens the circuit so let's power go to the cig lighter. So if you've got the jeep on and no power going to the lighter while all the fuses are good then its the relay.

I'm not sure where the relay for the cig lighter is ill take a look in the book
