cigarette lighter blows fuse

Bought the jeep w/o a lighter in it. Bought the correct replacement from adv. auto and the second you push it in it blows the fuse. I have used this to power/charge my mp3 and bluetooth and it works fine. are there different types of fuses(slow/fast burn) or is this really just a power outlet-not a lighter?
'98, 2.5L, 5 spd, stock
thanks

I quit smoking 32 years ago so my lighter was never used. My guess is you have the wrong size fuse.

always trying to quit-but it's a 'toughie'
right fuse-marked on the fuse box what size and it's replaced with what was in there to begin with.

What else goes out when the fuse blows, the lighter may just be the item that overloads the circuit but the other accessory may be just on the edge of blowing it and the lighter finishes it off.

And you never lose the urge to smoke, went from 2-3 packs a day to Zero on a dare.

BTW, the FSM has a section on diagnosis and testing the cigar lighter outlet. PM me your year for it. My 2004 manual shows it in section 8W.

only run 1 thing at a time in it-the power adapters for the mp3 player and the bluetooth phone adapter both run/charge just fine-just the lighter blows the fuse. bought the chrysler replacement lighter at adv auto-maybe got a bad one or are there different type of fuses(know on some there are-ie power jack on travel trailer-takes a slow burn-cook a fast burn in a second) but that's an older 'barrel' type-don't know if there are different 'spade' type fuses.

Cigarette lighters require more amps than MP3 players, blue tooth adapters, and their chargers. If you're trying to use the same size fuse that was ok with them, odds are that is why it is blowing the fuse. If it was wired in correctly, you need a higher amperage fuse. The TJ's cigarette lighter fuse is rated 20a.

I just cannot imagine spending 9 bucks for 20 butts, when I quit they were 5 bucks for a carton of 10 packs.

The last carton I bought was $2 for twenty packs. Of course that price was probably a little subsidized by the military and that was back in 1969.

So what size fuse is your cigarette lighter blowing? Did you catch my above post where I said the TJ cigaretter lighter circuit uses a 20A fuse?

Hey man if you jeep only came with only one plug it could be that it's a power port only. My cig lighter only works in one port that was plugged up because I didn't get a smoking package. At auto zone they have the female part for around 5-10 bucks you could put a new one in. I stopped using it because I smoke American spirits and they are packed so tight it will pull the cherry out. If you got it because bics and no tops don't mix just go get a refillable butane and keep it in your rig.

figured it was a lighter since it was right next to the built in ashtray. probably should know better than to assume anything

It was either installed incorrectly so its center + connector is somehow touching its grounded case, or it is defective for the same reason. Or, its hot (+) lead is shorted to ground somewhere, perhaps pinched.
