Clicking noise

hey, i have a '02 tj and about a year ago i started hearing a clicking noise comming from the engine and when i would accelerate the clicking would increase. now a year later it has came back, sometimes louder. when i give it gas the clicking increases as the rpm's go up. Ive realized that if i leave it in neutral or 1st and get it up to about 3,000 rpm it will stop temperarly, but then later as im driving randomly start up again. although with the sound of the tires and road you cant really hear it when doing over 40 mph. It doesnt really seem to impact the performance or anything. if anyone could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated, before i take it in and drop a ton of money into it

Kind of sounds like a lifter sticking. How long has it been since you have changed your oil?

most engine ticks are in the valve train, normally a lifter or rocker, but there are PLENTY of other places that you can hear a ticking sound from. if you have a video of the noise that will help.

Same thing here....02 Sport, 4.0 with a tick in the motor. I have actually noticed that after the motor is at running temp, and I sit in neutral, I can rev the motor and it stops, but as soon as I bring it back down to idle rpm's, it's there again.
I also believe I have a cracked exhaust manifold....on occassion, when I start the motor cold, it sounds like a miss in the engine for a little bit, but after things heat up, the crack closes up, and the sound is gone. The engine is solid though and doesn't miss a beat. (123,000 miles)
