Climate Control Swap

Does anyone know if you can swap a 98 Climate Control set-up with a 99+Climate Control set-up?

Yes, good question. I'd also like to be able to add the vent/floor mix setting, but I'm doubting that it'd be as easy as simply switching out the knob/slider assembly.

Don't know but I would think not. The setup on the left is similar to a YJ with basically rods and levers making the changes at the heater box for heat and defrost. The setup on the right is a more modern control with electronics driving the changes.

I think you can do it if you swap the entire system. Blower motor and everything. Basically just like a engine swap if you get it all it can be done.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't be worth the time or the money to convert all of it unless you had your controls go bad for some reason. Oh well.

I sure would like those other controls in my 98 though.

But.....
You can wish in one hand and sh*t in the other,
Let's see which hand fills up first!

The 97/98 is a cable set up, Where you slide the control and a cable moves the door. On the 99 and up it is done with an electric motor. You would need to change the entire hvac box, the controls and the dash harness.

right.

I wonder how much those parts run. Guess I could call the dealer and find out. I'm just not sure if I'm prepared to have a brick go flying out my back end at this time.

Why do you want to swap to the newer controls?

I've always HATED slider controls!
It's just a personal irritant, that's all.

I'm with you completely. It's the only thing on my 98 that concerns me. The engine can be rebuilt if need be, the worn seats can be replaced, but I'll always be stuck with those damn slide controls.

Awesome looking jeep, BTW. Love the white and black color scheme. Nice job!

I would like blended heat (even floor and dash) that you don't get with the early controls. Living in cold and windy Wyoming, I am always moving the airflow from floor to vent. It's the one thing that really annoys me in my daily drive.

This summer, I am going to disassemble the dash and see if I can ventilate (with a hole saw) the door that directs air between the floor and the vents. If I can get any kind of near equil flow I will be much happier next winter!

Thoughts on my plan?

Anyone have the dash apart far enough to see if this is practical?

Thanks
Allen

climate control swap

I too have been looking to swap my 98 climate controls to 99 controls, I did find some of these posts helpful. Sound like the swap could get costly.
