98 sport 6cyl, 31" MT/R
Getting ready to install 2.5 HD OME susp, JKS quicker discos and adj trac bars this weekend. However, for the past week there has been a metal to metal sounding clinking/rattle coming from (I think) the rear end. This rattle is especially pronounced at low speeds, going over smaller mogul type bumps. Strangely, going over larger obstacles-no noise. I've checked everything I could think of in my home garage...cant find any obvious problems.
Questions
1: any ideas on the clinking/rattling?
2: should I get it professionally checked before doing the mods this weekend?
3: Anyone want to help out with my credit card bill??????
Thanks all
Did you check the oil level in your differential? May not hurt to have that changed out if it hasn't been done in the past 15,000 miles. That would also allow you to inspect the gears in there.
Mike I am haveing the same problem you are have with 05 lj, and know what to do everything you said is is the same way for i checked everything i could cheat but nothing still hear it. if you get ant update on that problem please let me know and i will let you if i get any update. GOOD LUCK.
Found out today from the local Jeep aftermarket store that the chain drive in the transfer case will loosen up after only about 90-100,000 miles. They said they have seen the chain wear right
through the housing, and the t-case oil run out. That will cause some noise, I would think. Just another possibility.
I snapped a driveshaft right at the ujoint. That made a lot of little rattling before it broke. the C clamps had developed a little gap and after enough stress the ujoint tore right through the c clamp.

That's not kewl!!! Did you find it while driving down the road, or did you find it while inspecting in the driveway? I had a u-joint in a driveshaft let go once while traveling down the freeway... Sounded like a gunshot inside the Jeep! Well, at least you found it, and can fix it relatively easily...
OK, drove the hell out of it this weekend. This is my report:
Checked/drained/filled diffs- ok
High speed highway no noise/drives great
low speed road large bumps/big pot holes- no noise
low speed off road- steep/muddy hill climbs-no noise
" " " - big mud holes-no noise
" " " - washboard/small bumps- lots of clanking

Have a clanging sound on the TJ as well from the rear at very low speeds especially...turns out a weld broke on a complicated looking bracket for the exhaust, close to the wheel and it's spinning around like nobody's business and hitting everything.
You gotta be kidding me........
the internals of the driver side rear break had completely fallen apart inside the drum. Loose pieces and scrap metal everywhere. $350 to rebuild

actually i was driving down a main street and it kicked the stick right out of gear and the stick hit my hand. The driveshaft spun under the jeep and ripped off my brand new magnaflow exhaust!
you would think that when i got the new exhaust i would have noticed the breaking u joint!
