Clucth repair - 97 TJ

After some time of having my clutch pedal get increasingly hard to press down on it finally gave up today. It is a '97 Wrangler , Sahara with 128 k miles on it. I am no expert, and was just told by a mechanic that the whole clutch should be replaced, and that the job is in the 750 $ range.
My first question is, is it necessary to replace the entire clutch?
And is 750 $ a reasonable price for this kind of job? I am not looking to spend an excessive amount on it since i will be selling it.

Thank you in advance for your help!

pedal hard to push down?
usually a going clutch is slipping when you accelerate hard.
Id check the master and slave cylinders first.

replacing a clutch on a wrangler is a hard job. if you take it to a shop you looking at $500 just in labor.

$750 is about right if you are paying a shop to do it.

Or $200 to do it yourself. here... 1997 Jeep TJ Clutch Replacement

If your in there...change it all, if not...you'll be pulling it back down shortly to fix the rest anyhow.

Also...if you can do normal maint. to your vehicle...change oil spark plugs etc...YOU CAN change a clutch....simple job just have to try.

It wasnt slipping, just getting increasingly hard and then earlier today when pressing down on it i had a grind and clicking sound and the pedal was rock hard.

Thanks, yes it makes sense to get the whole job done while having the whole thing pulled apart. The dyi option is not for me, i dont have the expertise or tools. Also the mechanics i have spoken to have mentioned that the transmission needs to come out.

Sounds like a Master cly problem/stuck/crap in it.

Your clutch peddle is a lever, the top of the peddle is connected to the piston in the Master Cly.

Pop the top on it and check it out.
