Clunk, clunk, gone!

Just had to post. Very proud of getting rid of a clunk from the rear of my 2002 TJ. I replaced the shocks and tightened everything I could. Still had the noise. I then started lifting on the plate underneath the gas tank. It was loose. It wasn't until then that I noticed that all six bolts were dangling loose from the back bumper. It was bent down, but I used my scissor jack, pushed it up enough to tighten all six with left over washers and nuts. Now, no clunk! Pretty simple for most of you experienced guys, but I was pretty proud.

Good job! Those thumps, rattles and squeeks can be a real bugger to find and fix. Now I wonder why all those bolts weren't tight.

congrats. all victories are great, no matter how large!

Getting rid of an annoying clunk is always great. I too am curious why they were all loose.

Good job.

There are not many things better than figuring out & curing a persistent clunk or a rattle on a Jeep. I fought one for a year that just absolutlely drove me nuts, a loud snapping sound in front of the instrument cluster & it was satisfying to finally find & fix it. Good job on finding yours!
Remember that having a different opinion doesn't also require one to be a jerk when expressing it.

When you have a choice, buy American.
