Clunking Noise Underneath

I've got a 97 4.0 TJ Sport which has a loud clunking noise coming from under the vehicle. The clunking sound picks up with vehicle speed, yet goes away completely when you apply the brakes or turn the steering wheel left to right. The clunking noise is noticable at all speeds and sounds unsafe to drive as you can feel it coming up through the floor. 4x4 still works. Any ideas on this one? Thanks -

drive shaft u-joint. i had the same prob a few months ago. it sounds worse that it is. i originally thought it was my transmission or t-case. just crawl underneath and look at the u-joints on the drive shafts. if you do it yourself it is like a $20 repair.

Or sway bar links, or control arm bushings, or so on....

Does it happen when hitting a bump, straight smooth pavement?

Thanks for your thoughts on this one. The clunking noise is only when driving down the road. It's got high mileage 124K on it. Swaybar links were R+R already, but the joints are original. Happy Holidays to ya!

You're probably correct, the U joints are failing. I'll get it checked out. Happy Holidays to ya!

Good luck. U-joints are an easy fix.
