"Clunking" rear end

Hey everybody,
I just bought my first 6 cyl. TJ, it's got an automatic tranny. I've always had 4 cyl., standards. Anyway, when I put it in reverse, i get a nasty "clunk" sound and around the yoke on the rear end, there's a bit of gear oil! I don't know if the rear end is junk or the yoke came loose, I haven't got that far. I just wanted to see if anybody else has had this problem before I go and send it out to get fixed and pay some ridiculous amount of money. If anyone could email me at cinq1971@yahoo.com and let me know what's going on, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bob

Have you checked the u-joints in the drive shaft. If it isn't that then the rear end has a lot of slack in it and may need to be rebuilt.I don't know why it would only happen in reverse though. What year is it and if it is an older one the pinion seals are prone to leak eventually.

"clunking" rear end

Hi, I'm going to check the u-joints this weekend, but it sounds much louder and feels much more aggressive than u-joints. It's possible I'm wrong though. As for the year, it's a 1999. I have a friend who has a '99 Cherokee and another who's got an '01 Cherokee and theirs makes the same noise, just not as loud.

Come to think of it I just replaced a rear end in an S-10 Blazer a few months back and it only made the noise in reverse also. When I pulled the cover off it was one of the spiders busted and a few teeth missing from the ring gear.I know thats not what you want to hear but I just thought of that.
