Clutch ?

Hi all, after about an hour+ of stop and go traffic today. As I was getting home, every time I would go into 1st gear and accelerate my Jeep would start to tremble. Sometimes it would be mild sometime it was hard..

Every other gear would be fine. Then I tried reverse and the same thing would happen.. Also it got very difficult to put it into gears almost like it was being blocked..

Aer these signs that I am going to be need a whole new clutch ? or is it something else ?

Thanks.

Fluid level is fine.. 1997 5spd 2.5L

Yep, clutch chatter. It sounds like you have a dirty flywheel.
My 05 does it on damp or rainy days, for the first two or 3 times I use the clutch in a given day. It works fine after that, until it cools down again. Mine is mud/dirt for sure, not oil.
Oil can give the same symptom, but doesn't get better with use.

Wow, this is the first post I've seen with my exact symptoms. Lynn, we've had a lot of rain the past few days, and I've noticed it does it a lot. I can usually kind of ride it a bit and get it to take off smoothly, but not hardly on a wet day. Guess I need to get the ol' flywheel resurfaced. But what's this I hear about them being 'concave', I've heard that you can't get them turned, just cleaned up. Anyone ever heard of that?

Yep, TJ flywheels are dome-shaped. You can't get them resurfaced to a flat profile and have them work correctly.

On wet/damp days mine chatters the first time or two that I pull out from a stop. After that it works like normal. I'm not going to throw any money at fixing this... it's a minor idiosyncrasy that I can live with. If it happened every time I pull out or back up, I'd lose patience with that and look into a replacement clutch disc/flywheel cleaning or replacement. If I found that oil contamination was the source of the problem, I'd be sure to address that before replacing clutch components.

Just thought I would toss my name in too. Assuming its a rear main seal leak on mine causing it. Dry days one or two times through the gears and it quits. Damp days might take 3 or 4.

Mine does the same thing on rainy days. Didn't know the flywheel is concave though. Does anyone know the reason it is? Just wondering.
