Hi everyone I have a question bought my 04 jeep wrangler x 4.0l 5 speed 6 months ago shifted fine 5 days after I got it change all my fluids good for 5 months in the last month jeep starts fine shifts for about 50 miles after that if u stop at a light put it in neutral let out the clutch then push in the clutch it doesn't want to go in gear feels like the clutch isnt pushed in if I shut it off put it in gear it goes fine starts fine and shifts fine until I stop again but it can go into 1st fine before I completely stop it's only if I stop in neutral and try to go in first and only after a good 40 minutes of running or 50 miles any ideas where's to start I've checked all fluids they r fine including clutch master cylinder
try pumping the clutch a few times when you're at a stop about to take off. see if that lessens the difficulty shifting into first.
1) does the trans clunk or grind when you finally get it into first? if so, bad trow out bearing, clutch slave, or pilot bearing/bushing is usually the first thing to speculate.
2) is the color of the fluid in the clutch master res clear or dark? if dark, this may cause the clutch slave to work improperly. DO NOT BLEED THIS FLUID THROUGH THE BLEED VALVE!! siphon or draw the fluid out with a pump or turkey baster from the reservoir. then try bleeding the system. i used my brake bleeder for this task on my YJ.
3) does it only do it in first gear? if you experience this in reverse as well, sounds to me like a 1st gear synchro going. but try shifting into 2nd and third while at the stop after driving around until you start experiencing difficulty in shifting with first gear to see if it's a transmission or clutch problem.
my friend's TJ did the same thing. turned out to be a bad pilot bearing causing too much play in the input shaft. his had a brass one so we replaced it for a needle bearing one and it went away. but it was so bad that we couldn't even shift it into 1st either before we started to yank everything.
It does it in every gear Evan reverse no grind once it goes it's fine until I stop fluid looked clear when I check it and no clunk from the trans the pedal feels fine but I have to pump it and keep trying for it to engage after some trying it usually goes in to third them I cam get it into first
ok yeah difficulty shifting through all gears sounds like your clutch is going. and pumping it several times to get it to go into gear is a good example. sometimes the slave leaks and loses fluid too, but you said the fluid is fine.
a bad synchro would make some noise but not limit the ability to shift into gear.
