Clutch Issue?

My key won't turn all the way in the ignition. It takes several tries to get the jeep to turn on, but it will only start in neutral. If I start it in gear the car will lurch forward.

A friend told me he believes it is the clutch if the car lurches forward when in gear. If anybody knows if this is the case or what the issue could be, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also if I need to do some diagnostics, is there some sort of progression I should do? Like check this before that.

Thanks.

Souns like the clutch is not fully disengaged when the pedal is all the way down. Is the clutch master cylinder low on fluid. It is separate from the brake master cylinder.

Due to the lack of "common" sense left in humanity...the question needs to be asked. Are you pushing the clutch in when you start it in gear?

By the way, related note...where IS the master cylinder for the clutch? I've never had any clutch issues on my Jeep so I've never messed with it, but it'd be nice to know for future issues/maintenance.

Coming out of the top of your firewall on the driverside, beside your brake booster.

I checked the clutch fluid and it is about an inch from the top. Yellow/light orange colored. Any suggestions?

should take dot3 brake fluid inside the clutch master cylinder tank. Read the cap to be sure. If filling it does not solve problem it could either be the slave cylinder going bad or your clutch going bad. If the clutch pedal is not stiff and letting out properly it may be worn down, but I would think that the slave cylinder is going bad and not fully disengaging the clutch when you push the pedal. You can also crack the bleeder much like bleeding brakes and make sure of no air after you fill the clutch master cylinder the bleeder should be on the slave cylinder on the bell housing of the transmission. good luck

No. The slave cylinder was improperly installed by the dealership a couple years back and that caused the clutch issue, but the key still won't turn in the ignition with the clutch replaced. It will turn the first two positions and lights up the display, but will not continue to the third position (starting the car). If you attempt to, the cd player cuts off like it about to start, but the key won't turn all the way to start the car.

Does anyone think the issue is the column lock?
