Clutch Noise

My friend has a 97 TJ with the 2.5L and AX5. He comes to me today saying that when pressing the clutch down he hears a clunking/creaking noise and feels it in the pedal. Last week I drove it and the clutch felt great. Today the pedal feels harder to press and the last quarter press you hear and feel that clunk and creak. I have gotten under and the sound seems to be and feels to be coming from the bellhousing. I want to think its the throwout possibly going bad or the pressure plate wearing out. It makes the noise engine on or off. Doesnt seem to affect shifting but its just tougher to press the pedal. TJ only has around 60k on it. Any other ideas before we go swapping the clutch? Thanks

Sounds to me that u having a bad pilot bearing the one that goes in your engine block, when its the trought out bearing u would hear it when u let the clutch pedal off u would hear it the bearing grinding. But in these case sound more like the bearing that goes in the block and if that's the case u gona have to replace the whole clutch n the bearing. Just did my trought bearing not as hard as I was thinkin to do. Good luck

Would the pilot bearing going bad make noise with engine off?

Not with the engine off it won't make a sound only with engine on. My trough out bearing was making a noice with engine on not off and when u let the clutch pedal off not when u press it. But if u feel ur clutch getting harder than the usual u might have to check either ur slave pump or master clutch pump. Other then hearing that noice ur talking about I do hear a noice when u press the clutch on my rig with engine off or on but I'm assuming that its ok but I don't feel my pedal hard or anything.
