1997 Jeep Wrangler SE
Hello folks, This is my first jeep but from what I've been reading, this seems to have the most knowledgable folks on issues.
Here's my issue:
I do not have any problems shifting in and out of gears and it shifts smoothly. The problems start within the first 20 or so minutes. After the jeep warms up and I stop at a light or stop sign, the jeep feels like I'm starting in 3rd gear or acts as if it were my first time driving a manual transmission. It has a "shudder" type feel (thats the best way to describe it). I'm still able to shift into and through the gears without problems but I find myself shifting immediately into 2nd gear to get out of the shudder. After it sits for a while and I drive it again, it works like a champ until it warms back up again. I'm not too sure as to what the problem is but it does have me concerned because I don't have that immediate "get out of the way" ability due to the problem. I was thinking it could be a clutch or transmission issue but thats why I came here to the pro's. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
i have the exact same problem. it only comes up after the jeep is warmed up and driven a couple miles and only in first gear does it ever shutter. it shifts just fine but i feel just like you stated, like I just learned how to drive stick i cant stand it
Does the shudder still happen once you have the clutch completely out and are in first gear? Have you noticed if it's worse on an uphill? If you give it more gas does the shudder improve or get worse? Answering some of these questions might help. Does your jeep make a noise while you have the clutch in, almost like a whining noise?

No it happens as you are letting the clutch out right after it engages but it is not all of the way out yet, Once it has started shuttering the more gas I use usually makes it worse. Uphill is usually when I notice it the most. It never does it when I start the jeep after it has sat for an hour or 2 but once it is all warm is when it always starts.
Probably in need of a new clutch. I personally would do clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing while you are in there. To test your clutch, pull your e-brake put the Jeep in third gear and let out on the clutch like you want to drive it. You will probably find that you have very little bog down, and if that's the case you are definitely in need of a clutch.
So why is it that I only have the problem in first but don't feel it as I am driving with any other gear? I forgot to mention that if the jeep is still rolling when I go to let out in first it doesn't do it as bad or at all sometimes.
If what you are describing is indeed the clutch then yes a new clutch will solve your problem. The ebrake test I learned from my father when I was a teenager looking for used cars to buy. Throughout my 17 years of buying used cars (in excess of 20 of them) I have steered away from about 5 cars due to this "test" failing, thus telliing me it needed a clutch. I bought one after it failed because the guy was honest up front and told me that it needed a clutch.
Avoid the high-dollar clutch kits like from Centerforce which have no benefit for a Wrangler. A Luk clutch is highly recommended and a complete Luk kit can be found for under $150, sometimes even for less than $100 on some sites like eBay, maybe Amazon. A Luk clutch can last over 200k miles even with some abuse, the kit includes a new clutch disk, throwout bearing, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and pilot shaft.

When you do your clutch, check the front of your transmission for any gear oil seepage. It may need a new seal. The symtoms you described are typical of oil being on a friction surface like a clutch plate or brake pad. Once heated they get sticky. It could also be engine oil, but not as likely as the flywheel kind of protects the clutch from that.
Just put a Luk clutch in my Jeep last week...smoooooth, happy happy
