Code p0016

My jeep threw this code the other day. I went to auto zone and he told me the code and what it meant. Cam sensor or crank sensor. The code went off when I was going around 70. Later in the day while driving around town it went off.
When the code was on the jeep ran the same no issues.
Now here is the question if it happens again should I just go ahead an change the sensors or should I go ahead an take out the opda and check the gears for abnormal wear. The jeep is a 2005 and there are countless threads on opda.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Checking the gears in the OPDA is a free diagnostic. Check the wiring to the sensors before you go replacing them.

From the conditions you mention, sounds like a sensor.

It’s not a sensor problem. The OPDA has turned (not likely but possible) or the cam &/or OPDA gear (or both) has worn enough to retard the sensing wheel to throw the code. Usually after warm up it will throw the engine into “limp home” mode & limit the RPMs. Better check the OPDA, if the gear breaks you will have a lot more problems. If you wait for another code it might be too late.
