considering front and rear receiver hitches for winch

I would really like to be able to move a winch front to back and detach for placing it inside the jeep or in the garage to keep it from the weather. I am strongly considering the dyneema or other synthetic line for safety and for weight savings, especially if I lug the thing in and out/front to back, as needed. I am considering looking into a winch that will not be as heavy as other choices due to the synthetic line, and overall design and materials... and to save weight and money I am considering getting a smaller winch with less than the reccomended power to jeep weight ratio, and making it up some with a block and tackle, etc. to increase pulling power..
what do you guys think ? I know it is a lot of questions.. but seems we need them asked together to better get the best answers possible.

Attaching your winch to a front receiver hitch will negatively impact your approach angles. A quality winch will be able to survive in the elements and there is no reason to keep it stored in your garage.

No adverse effect on approach angle if you mount the receiver on top of front bumper

Harbor freight has a heavy duty one with a flat plate and four bolt holes ( they also have a less desirable medium duty one)

I mounted one so I could use front and rear receiver mounted pickup bed extenders (reversed like tall goal posts) to support a long ladder above the hardtop and carry 16 foot synthetic deck planks on the ladder 6 miles home from the hardware store

I did add a piece of angle steel behind the bumper bolted to frame rails so I had a nice wide platform for the receiver hitch plate

Purposefully buying a smaller winch then trying to make up for it using block and tackle does not seem like a smart idea.
Weight savings will be minimal, and if something fails someone can be injured or killed, not a good idea to skimp.

Don't drive around with something like that inside your Jeep unless you have a way to secure it really we'll. it could kill you in a crash.

I have always strongly believed a receiver hitch mounted winch is only suitable for light duty winching. Receiver hitches suitable for Jeeps are typically only rated to 3500 lbs. which isn't much when doing heavier offroad winching tasks with a Jeep-size winch typically rated 8000 to 9500 lbs.

I personally wouldn't do it.

This one is 5000 lb

If properly attached not sure winch mount plates are much stronger but still not an optimal way to mount a winch

Not what I use it for but it does fit nicely

Knowing what's underneath the bumper where that receiver hitch is mounted, just a steel tube, it's not frame mounted which means it doesn't really have a 5k lb. rating... bad news where any forces could be concentrated into such a small area. I'd bet it could be ripped off with any serious force against its bolts. At best it might be screwed into the tube underneath the bumper that an Antirock uses.

Ok but the aftermarket front bumper is quarter inch thick channel and the angle iron behind it is also 1/4 inch thick and between the two they are mounted to every frame bolt that the commonly sold winch plates bolt to so although I don't think the winch plates are the strongest setup out there I don't think the receiver mount is significantly weaker

Then agin I just use it for a rack mount but I would not be afraid to use it as a attachment point for a recovery strap if the need arose

That front receiver Digger has looks a bit weaker than my winch mount but a hell of a lot stronger than a winch cable so if you consider the cable a fuse that mount is going no where.

thanks to all.. I have more to think about now..

I guess if the weights saving is minimal, there is no reason to go smaller than optimum size.
I had not thought it through, thanks for pointing out it becomes a missile in a crash if not really tightly fixed down.
I am thinking now that the way to go is to just run my solenoids up under the hood and cover the winch and line when not in use.
I appreciate the input.. I guess I just need to get on with it..
