Control Arm Differences

I have a '98 Sport and need to replace the control arms, definitely lowers possibly uppers. The bushings are pretty worn out.

I was shopping around and can't figure out what the difference is between the ones sold by Quadratec and those sold by Autozone or Napa. The price difference is huge, but I can't see how these would be functionally different.

Jeep is currently on stock suspension, but will get a OME 2" or TeraFlex 3" soon. I understand that I can run stock control arms on either of these lifts, at least until I can afford to upgrade to something that is an actual upgrade.

Links to the arms I'm looking at. Any differences as a stock replacement?

Skip all of the places you mentioned and order some Moog control arms from either RockAuto or Amazon, who ever is cheaper. The lowers are about $25 each, and the upper arms are a little more. For the front upper arms you have to order the axle end bushings separately, and have fun replacing them! Each bushing will take you somewhere from 1 hour to many hours depending on how rusty they are and how good your tools are.

When it comes to stock control arms the are pretty much all alike. It's a stamped steel arm with a couple clevite bushings pressed in, not too much to get wrong.

You don't need to upgrade your control arms until you plan on going beyond 3" of lift, I ran for a long time on stock arms with a 3.5" lift, no ill effects at all (and I didn't use the transfer case drop). There is no point in spending $700 (twice what your looking at for stock arms) for C/As like RC's X-Flex or JKS, or for the list above somewhere around $1000.

Replacing the individual bushings can be a real bear, but replacing control arms, one at a time is very simple, just put jack-stands under the frame at one end (one end at a time) and use a little floor jack under the axle to move it up and down, just do one at a time and you'll be done in no time.

I bent a stock control arm back in January. Ran a trail I had run before but it had changed for the worse. I think maybe you should think about some Rough Country lowers at least.

The aftermarket fixed control arms like rc, skyjacker, etc. are far inferior to the oem ones. The stock arms are stamped for a reason. Since the clevite bushings don't give enough flex in themselves for some of the off road flexing, some of the flex comes from the arms themselves. The aftermarket arms are rigid, which means that the bushings and mountings are taking a beating.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was buying them but right now I'm not doing a lot of flexing with my 2.5 and 31's. I figured he would be doing about the same type of wheeling so I just figured they might be a benefit.

That's what I have heard from a number of people. OEM is a good option unless you want to really upgrade to something with a flexible joint, like Johnny joints. The less expensive after market arms place too much stress on the mounts.

Makes sense to me looking at the designs. Anyways, I can replace the. All for $300 now to improve ride, handling and alignment.

faks I'm sorry but maybe on your jeep you didn't need new arms.
I needed new lowers when I put a 3 inch on mine.
I has death wobble like crazy.
The jj arms are a great thing to buy and you won't regret it.
All jeeps are different some need arms some don't.

I think I'm going with a 2" lift either way, so hopefully the stock arms work out.
