Coolant issue....

Another TJ problem...

I recently topped off the coolant, burped her, and added 50/50 to fill line. I noticed the coolant smell after a short drive (not even up to temp yet). When I stopped, steam was coming out the hood...I opened the hood, and it looked like it was dripping somewhere on the left side of the engine(top) near the injectors. When I got home and shut it off (now up to temp), the leak had stopped...no apparent loss of fluid, i noticed what hadn't evaporated of the fluid was still in the valve cover lip and some on a low groove in the intake manifold where it had ran down. Is this a small leak that temporarily seals once it gets hot at the broken seal? I hope like hell im not going to have to buy a gasket...Is the I-manifold hard to take off?

Did you get the radiator cap screwed all the way down after topping it up and burping the system? It sure sounds like the cap may be leaking from being loose.

Going out now to double check, see if it happens again.

Ok, cap was on good and tight. I let it warm up, lightly revving at times and turned on different heat settings to replicate the drive when i noticed it...nothing happened...I remember a good drip off the top left of the motor along the fuel rail/injector area dripping onto the intake manifold, that was causing the steam...any chance that this was a blowoff from overfilling?

EDIT: Just went out to look again cuz its bothering me...the top hose was able to be tightened at the radiator and the thermostat. There was some residual coolant that could've been coming from the hose/thermostat connection, but since it got on the belt and sprayed everywhere its hard to tell...most of it is dried up and it won't do it again. lol Looks like another "wait and see" deal.

I had the same type of issue. The reservoir hose was not tight against the neck and I had a few drops leak out every time I ran the Jeep. Also my top hose was not as tight and had some leakage. So check your other hoses too. But it sounds like you got most of it.

Man I hope...tryin to figure out, on the overflow tank is there a hole/hose where coolant would get released out of the tank? (permanently, not back into the rad..aka the freakin culprit of my messy engine bay)

The hose that comes off of the radiator into the reservoir is how the system gets more coolant and releases extra coolant. Maybe the hose has a hole in it? I'm sure you could replace it with some work because it is clamped to the plastic reservoir. But if the reservoir itself is leaking, just replace it.

Ok. Gonna see if it'll work this morning since its good and cold now. Fingers crossed that it's not the water pump. On a scale of 1 to F*&K this, how hard is it to change pump? Avg Price of pump?

I had a bad radiator and went ahead and changed out the water pump (as suggested by forum folks), thermostat and housing, cap, hoses, and serpentine belt after completely flushing the system (I switched to HOAT extended life antifreeze in the process). It's not hard to change out the water pump. It's just a bit time consuming and requires some methodical thinking. BUT...it's really critical that the mounting surfaces are spot clean before installing the new gaskets. Repeat...spot clean...no residue whatsoever of previous gasket or rust. Don't use any permatex either. Just the gasket on a clean surface with the bolts properly torqued will do the job without leaks. WeRMopar has OEM water pumps with gasket for $119.34 online. I would suggest not putting cheap, aftermarket parts in your cooling system. Once you finish the job, you really don't want to do it over again, and you want the confidence that the parts are going to last.

My local dealer quoted me $180, then when I asked for a lower price, they would only go down to $160. I really should have gone online for this. $110 at wermopar.com.

Thank you all! I'll keep my eye on it. I just drove around town and nothing happened...again. I did notice that overflow ridge off the back, top of the tank. Here's what I think happened...Tuesday I topped off fluid, Wednesday went to family's, Saturday came back and moved Jeep from driveway to road via dropping off a curb. I then noticed the fluid when i drove after that...I think I just experienced an "overfill/expansion situation". I'll keep updates coming.

Found the issue!!! It was the top rad hose right above the clamp where it goes into the therm. I smelled it again while driving...left it running, opened the hood and saw a needle prick of a hole squirting to the left side of the motor and in the pulley system...thank god it was a $12 part vs. $180. Still green light for NC-IN roadtrip this month!!!!!

Just a little pin prick. They'll be no more AAAAHHHHH. But you may feel a little sick.

Glad you found the problem and it was an easy fix. Cheap and easy fixes are the best.
