coolant leak

I just got home and after about 20 minutes went in the garage and there was antifreeze on the floor. I pooped the hood and could hear preasure releasing. sounded like the cap but i could see fluid around the crimps on top tank and the drip was from the passenger side of the shroud should i replace the cap. I have a 2002 with a 4.0 it has 50k on it.

It could be just a crappy cap. Last summer I kept finding leaks after having near overheating moments, popped the hood to find the antifreeze bubbling, turns out the wire on my fuse box in the glove box that went to the radiator fan came unplugged. Amazing how that little fan really does cool the engine.

I'm not sure what year models it effects but it is well known in the community that some (most?) stock TJ radiators are junk. If it has plastic tanks on it crimped to the aluminum it is the radiator that is notorious for going bad. Replace it with one that has metal tanks. There are some threads that cover this. Like THIS ONE. Hope this helped you.

Most any repair shop can pressure test the system - takes only a moment. They'll probably want $5 or $10. Then you can find the leak without just guessing.

After radiator flush, new clamps/hoses, and thermostat install on my used 2000 Jeep Wrangler 2.5l, I 'm finding small amount of coolant on garage floor the next morning after running it day before. No overheating. Thermostat housing is not source of leak. Nor can I detect where leak originates. I see drip onto tranny skidplate and some wetness on black corrugated wiring cover below brake fluid reservoir. Jeep didn't have this minor leak before thermostat install. Guess I need a pressure test? Any ideas what's likely the source of the leak?

As mentioned above already, the usual source of leakage from the OE radiator is where the top or bottom plastic pieces are crimped to the aluminum core. Once they start leaking, that's it... the radiator has to be replaced, that particular leak cannot be permanently repaired.

The water pump has weep holes that leak when the water pump goes out. Check that.

After my first three OE radiators leaked that were replaced by the dealer under warranty, the dealer installed a 4th... a locally supplied aftermarket all metal radiator. It was still in my TJ when it was stolen in March, 11 years after it was installed. I used to recommend Radiators, automotive radiators, condenser, oem radiators, truck radiators but their quality has been variable. I suspect their radiators are all made in China anyway so I would probably go looking locally again. I would make sure it had an aluminum core like the OE radiator has
