Courtesy Light's Not Coming on

I have seen many threads of people trying to get they're courtesy lights to turn off but none on getting them to turn on.

1998 Wrangler SE.
I have no owners manual so I have just been guessing what fuse controls what based on what I have seen on this forum and online. As far as I can tell #4 controls the Dome Lights and footwells when doors open. It requires a red 10amp fuse.

I have placed the above fuse in the corresponding spot and ... nothing. Now I am not sure what everyone elses soundbar looks like but there is a plastic wire wrap running from behind the center console, under the pedals, and up the (B Column?) frame bar just behind the driver seat. This leads me to believe it is possibly an aftermarket soundbar. I will try and provide pictures when I am back to my house (Possibly sunday afternoon).

Any thoughts as to why they will not come on after placing a new fuse in? I can imagine the Dome lights are simply not connected if it truly is an aftermarket soundbar. But the footwells should at least come on yes?

I haven't even found where the footwell lights are it is possible that there are not even any bulbs in which case this is a pointless thread.

More than likely, you don't have them to begin with. They look like this Jeep Wrangler TJ Courtesy Under Dash Lights 99 06 Light | eBay The slotted opening is held on by one of the screws under the lip of the dash near the outboard sides. I belive from posts I have read, early TJs (or maybe SEs) don't have them.

Slow down and learn what you have first.

Check fuse #17 (10amp). That should be the fuse that powers the dome and underhood lamps. Fuse #4 is the door switch defeat fuse which just eliminates the door switch operation (when pulled) of the dome light and and warning buzzer when you have the doors off.

Fuse 17 did not change anything either. The Fuse that was in it was fine though I replaced it anyway.

I did not find anything resembling a light like Neil had posted. But it was dark and I only glanced. Still haven't found time to check. Worst case I go buy a LED strip from autozone and stick it under the dash.

The Dome lights not coming on is really bugging me. Live in a neighborhood with minimal street lights so getting in and out after dark is boarder-line dangerous. If I ever get time to rip out the dash perhaps I can find out where this Soundbar was wired up and possible rewire it to fuse #4. That is of course if it is not just fully powered by the radio.

I will get a few pictures of mine for you. I had the same problem here my door switch things were unhooked. I hooked one up and still no luck here that one was broken. Replaced both of them and put a fuse in the fuse box and my dome light and foot well lights worked

This is what i did. One picture of Door switch, light under dash, the 2 wires i have going into the fuse bock that go to a fusable link then to a switch so when i take my doors off i dont have to pull the fuse.

Will your dome light come on from turning your headlight switch all the way?

I'm having the same problem .......

My dome & floor lights come on with the HL switch, but not when the doors are opened. All fuses are where they're supposed to be and are good.

The dome light and door ajar circuits are grounded through fuse #4 when the fuse is installed and the door is opened. Maybe you have a bad or corroded ground coming out of the fuse block. You might try clipping onto the fuse #4 holder with a test lead, and ground the other end, then open the door and see if the light comes on (you might have to try both terminals if you can't determine which one goes to the switch. Before you do that check the fuse holder on #4 to confirm it's not hot (with the door closed) with a test light.

If you have a Haynes Manual, the schematic is on page 12-50.

I found a drawing of the simplified Jeep dome/courtesy lamp circuit I drew a while back. Maybe it will help you figure out your issue.

Clearly I have not gotten to this yet, but just wondering, as I sit here at work...

I suppose I will have to look behind my fuse box at some point but with a working fuse in the #4 slot...and No footwell lights coming on, the Dome light doesn't come on (unless manually pressed), there is no buzzer telling me my doors are off with lights on...

What is that #4 fuse doing?

Fuse #4 is simply being used as a jumper to provide for a complete circuit to ground for when the doors are open (or off). If the lights are turned on with the dash switch, the dash switch has its own path to ground. If you pull fuse #4 there is no way for the current to return to ground when the doors opened (or not there) See the diagram two posts up.

All the switches on the interior lights are on the ground side of the circuit...they are just completing the circuit to ground when switched "on"

Good write-up WD

#4 is on the ground side and provides an easy disconect when the doors are removed. See the drawing above your power distribution comes from #17 in the PDC.
