Cracked cylinder

So I was having a slight tick witch turned into a knock yesterday. I took it to my mechanic who to day let me know it is a cracked cylinder. So my question is should I pay the 1800 to get it fixed or go a little more and get a new engine. It's a 98 4 banger. What would y'all do

Get it double checked it might not be cracked.. 1800 I think is steep for a 4 cylinder could probably go get a 6 for a little more but will need to move motor mounts and I believe something with the harness but I am not sure... but those 4 cylinder motors deserve more credit then given tough motors mine went anywhere I pointed it to and was only slow on take offs... Good luck!

The block is going to need to be sleeved. I don't see how it could be fixed and not be rebuilt in the process.

For that price I would think that's what would be happening.

If the cyl is cracked, a new piston will not do you any good.
That cyl that is cracked will have to be sleeved.

Sense the engine is coming down that far, rebuild it.

500 labor
1000 rebuilt motor
200 oil, filters, antifreeze, water pump, belts, hoses, thermostat, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor

Agreed steep price bro I believe a complete built 4.0 runs 2200 a junkyard 2.5 should not be more than 400$ maybe even from a yj just swap fuel injection stuff

I had a cracked cylinder. Wound up replacing the engine. Looking back I should have just done the v8 conversion...

If the cylinder is cracked between cylinders you might as well start looking for another short block.

$1800 is a long way toward a new engine. You could spend that much on repair and then have something else go wrong next week.

4bt, NV4500, D300. Then D60's front and rear when you pretzel the rest of the drivetrain.
