D30 U-Joint Noise

Hello.

My right stock D30 u-joint makes a knocking noise when I brake after backing up.
What should I do now?
  • A. Install some stronger u-joints in the stock axle shafts. Which HD u-joints would fit?
  • B. Install some chromoly axle shafts with HD u-joints

At the moment I don“t have much money. I would prefer A...

Thanks.

I would just install the stock u-joint spicer brand.. should last a while. Also I would think its the cheapest route...

Im running the alloy USA joints. i got them from northridge4x4.com. Pretty much the stock sealed joints ar ethe way to go. but i like the alloy usa, fully greasable as well.

Your current OE u-joints are Spicer 297, the upgraded Spicer joint which is more durable is the Spicer 760. The exact Spicer part number is 5-760x. It works very well, I regularly do very tough trails that are occasionally 5 and 5+ and my 760 ujoints are holding up nicely.

i agree, spicer u joints are the way to go. they last around 80-100k, and aftermarkets last about 30-50k.

i've heard greasable can be weaker, cuz they are hollow all the way through, i don't have an opinion there. but if you don't grease greasable u joints frequently they won't last at all.
