d35 pinion seal

Well I need to change my pinoin seal and need to know what the correct tourque is to tighten the pinion to so it will not be to loose or to tight so it doesn't crush the sleeve anymore and add any pinion preload. I can't seem to find a straight answer.

can't measure preload with the carrier in place. here's how i've done it at least a hundred times. remove nut, replace seal. technically the nut is not reusable. getting a new pinion nut is politically correct. 99% of the time i will re use it, BUT, with adding blue threadlocker when putting it back on. there is a ft/lb torqu spec for that nut, it is bs. its like 250 lb/ft. you run the risk of crushing the sleeve more doing it that way. when you tighten it down, use a strong impact gun, and tighten it till its tight, and give it 3 quick raps of about 2-3 secs. shouldn't really feel any play up and down or in and out. done.

i have seen a couple come back loose when people re used the nut with no threadlocker, i've never had a problem yet.

ya, no need to do that at all. the job pays a mechanic 6/10 of an hour (little more than 30 mins.) , it is very simple

I am a Master Tech and have changed quite a few,Here is how I do it (1) Take a sharp center punch and mark the nut and pinion then count the threads sticking out past the nut,Then remove the nut washer & flange & change out the seal,Reassemble with a new seal and tighten the nut back to the same spot with the same amount of threads above the nut,I have never had a problem doing it this way in fact 1 of the big three automakers used to specify the above procedure.

pinion seal costs around $14. not time to scrap it yet. i'd say the line is closer to $25
