I own a 2004 TJ “X” manual trans and have play between ring and pinion, here a clunk when I shift, currently have a dana 35 with 3.07. can buy used dana 35 and dana 30 with 3.73 for 1700.00, is this too much?. I have been looking for dana 44 for over a yearin the Norfolk, VA area but no luck. Running 31" tires with 2" lift kit. This my DD and only use to go on the beach when fishing. thanks for any help

$1700 is way too much for a D35 & D30. There was a pair listed on CL near me just a few months ago for around $400-$500 for the pair. Heck, you should be able to pick up a D35 with 3.73 gears for less than $200 on CL, and get your D30 regeared for $600-$800.

Wayyyy too much for that combo. I sold my front dana 30 with 3.73 gears for $150 complete. D35s go for 100-200 in my area. $1700 is WAYYYYYYYYY too much.

First, there is supposed to be rotational play at the the driveshafts. That is due to the required backlash (slop) between the ring & pinion gears inside the axle. The amount the driveshaft (or pinion shaft) can be rotated either direction can be alarming to some, just rest assured it's not supposed to be tight without play.

And if you're new to a manual transmission as many new Wrangler owners are, the clunk you hear may just be from how the transmission is being shifted. That clunk may go away with a little more time with the transmission.
