Smile Dana 35 upgrade or replace?

Hi:Will upgrading the axles + adding a lock rite to my 3.07 geared a workable deal or not.Jeep is 97tj,6cyl,5spd.29in.tires on stock wheels.Really just want to add a posi. JPmag.claimes that the dana 35 is junk and adding a posi is a wast of time and money. I am not planning to do any hard core stuff, just get around in the back country without stressing my budjet or jeep. Any input will be greatly appreacated. Tj97.

Welcome to WF.

Not sure if you really need to do anything other than invest in perhaps some better tires for backcountry driving. Some really good All/Mud terrains can do wonders. Besides, a posi on the road is really not a great idea. Throw in a little rain or ice and you might find yourself in a ditch if you have a posi.

The D35 is fine in stock form for offroad use. If you want to go hardcore, they make some nice build kits for the D35. However, if you go that route, you are generally looking at a lift, larger tires and a better ratio.

I think your best bet would be to find a d44 from another jeep. Many of them came with a Limited Slip. I don't think they were available with 3.07, so a regear in your front would be necessary. 3.55s would be just fine with 29 and mild off-roading. They'd handle 31 or 32s if you're careful.
