Dana 44 carrier

I've got a 3.55 rear dana 44 with trac-loc, spider gears are shot to hell. I'm thinking I'm going to keep the ratio for now b/c it's my DD. I've found that the rodeo's have dana 44's with 4.3 ratios LS. I've also heard that they use thick gears so the carriers can go <3.73 is this true? and can I harvest it out of the rodeo and swap mine? oh I'm not rich and I only 4 wheel like once a month if that so it's main function is hwy.

yes some rodeo's have a D44 in the rear...different bolt pattern and different width (similar tho). you cant use their 4.56 whatever gears because what are you going to do about the front?

yes, thick gears can be used with a <3.73 carrier. But they are around the same price as a new carrier with >3.73 gears.

your best bet is to fix the spider gears or do an 8.8 swap.

well moneys tight and I want to keep the 3.55 ratio for mpg reasons. I can get new gears but those are about 350+ whereas i can pull that carrier and use with my ring for like 75 bucks

that $75 doesn't include the new master install kit and gear setup tools you'd need, does it?

well even if I rebuild the carrier with new gears wouldn't I need the kit anyways?

not with new spider gears, but if you put a different gear set OR a different carrier in there you will (like your rodeo proposition).

ya just looked at the tool list.. not pretty. The only issue is my buddy welded the s@!# out of my spider gears so I'm gonna have to break out the grinder to get em out :/ That's kinda seeming like the more feasible option at this point. Any other tips?

A new carrier isn't that expensive, I paid $55-60 for the last one I bought.

well seeing as the tool list is not what I expected, how much would a shop charge to install a new carrier?

A shop will typically charge $200-250 labor to install a new carrier, bearings, & set up the gears in a rear axle. Usually about $50 more for the front axle because of all the steering gear being in the way.

It's something I would like to learn to do myself and I have a buddy that knows how to re gear, IYO would this be something worth learning or should I leave that to a pro? (I do plan on turning it into a crawler a few years down the road)

Personally, though I enjoy doing most of my own work, that is one job I leave to the pros. That job is challenging and tricky enough that not even the pros get it right the first time... and getting it wrong means the new gears are toast.

I've been dealing with this issue for a LONG time so I apologize for all the questions. What is this 50 dollar carrier you speak of or is it JUST the carrier?

When I say carrier, I mean just the carrier. And I never mentioned a $50 carrier, I said the last one I bought was $55-60 which was after finding it with a good discount.

If you can get those welded spider & side gears out, just replacing them would work fine. Good luck getting them out.

Alright well I think I have my options in front of me I'll call up some shops/ friends see which way I should go. Thanks for all the help guys this whole process has been quiet confusing
