Dana Axle Upgrade

So what's everyone's thought on upgrading my rear axle from a Dana 35 to a 44? How much would it run me? Should I look for a locking differential? Is it worth it?

what tire size do you plan on running? how much lift do you have? what gears do you want to run? what type of wheeling do you do? whats your budget?

I'm ditching me D35 to a D44. At least it will give me a piece of mind that I can come home after my wheeling or hunting trip.

I got mine for $1200 and another $100 for e-brake cables. It has the disc brake in the rear.

Good luck

Id' like to 33"s or 35"s and whatever lift I need to accommodate them. I don't intend on doing crazy rock crawling, but some serious off roading. oIIIIIIo was the $1200 for parts & install or only parts.

That price (1,000-1,500) will be for the axle only, and it will be for a standard D44 axle. (Open or limited slip differential, not a Rubicon axle with 4.10 gears and a locker.) Daveys Jeeps in Ohio quoted me 1,750 for a rear Rubicon axle. Don't forget that you have to match your gear ratios front and rear.

Research the 8.8 ford. I just completed mine that was begun by someone else. For about a grand, I got the following:
Ford 8.8 w disc brakes: New Gears & Bearings 4.88 ratio. Freshly rebuilt ford-trac loc limited slip. Brackets and spriing perches professionally welded. Tubes welded. Lower adjustable control arms. Langiappe was the set of 4.88 and install kit for my D30.

What I had to buy afterwards: E brake cable kit $60. (2) Ford Exploder right hand brake hoses. $20. Hard Brake lines $7. Turned brake rotors $12 ....and probably another $20 or $30 bucks of assorted bs...brake fluid, gear oil and band-aids.

Shell out another $300 to have the gears professionally installed into my D30, $30 for a speedo gear and bang....... We are golden. Gear change axle swap AND disc brake conversion.....for about $1500 beans.

While at it I did do a slip yoke eliminator and got a set of upper rear control arms - - but that would not have been necessary for my project. If I had to do it again, I would probably skip the adjustable LOWER control arms and only get the adjustable UPPER control arms.
