They are 4"x6" - and if you are going to upgrade them, you will probably also need adaptors like these:

Metra Speaker Adapters 4x6 JEEP 97-UP 82-1010 - eBay (item 360122300447 end time Oct-04-09 15:42:29 PDT)

do not replace with 4" by 6" speakers there shit even when you get upgraded ones. speakers are not meant to be oval is distortes the sound and gives horrible kick.. replace with the same speakers in the sound bar they make adapters for it

4x6 speakers (generally) are just fine.

They are but really, round 5.25" speakers sound better in that location. Generally speaking, round speakers are inherently better able to provide good sound than oval speakers can. That's why you never see oval speakers in high-end speakers.

I agree with the basic concept that round speakers sound better than oval. But whether that is really noticeable in any given application - in the real world situation of a jeep dash - is debatable.

I recently upgraded all the speakers and added a sub in my jeep. I seriously considered going with 5.25 rounds in the dash locations. But two things convinced me to put 4x6's in instead. First, in the store where I was able to test out the speakers I did not hear that big a difference between the 4x6's and the 5.25's in the model I had chosen. There was a difference, but not enough to get me to interested in the extra work to retrofit the 5.25's in the dash (there is some cutting involved). The second thing that convinced me is that, although with some modification the 5.25's will fit, the opening for the sound will still restrict the 5.25's. So I'm not sure that the difference that I heard in the store would even translate into a real world difference in the jeep.

In the end it's all about the total sound package - how all the speakers work together. I'm convinced the 4x6's in the dash are a fine part of that package in my jeep. Your mileage may vary...

I concur with Schulzmc. I have the Polk 4" x 6" plate speakers in my dash and love them.

There is an online place that primarily handles jeep stuff(can't recall the name and can't find the box). Bought a set of metal adapters for $20 from them that converts to 5.25" with no mods to the stocl location. I a 5.25" comp set of CDT's from woofersetc.com. Surface mounted the tweeters to the plastic A-pillar cover. They are getting about 80w RMS and sound way better than the Infinities that were in there.

Just another option

The sound bar speakers are 5.25's. If you go to Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Stereo, Home Theater, Speakers, Plasma TV you can enter your vehicle and it will give you sizes and options.
