dead starts...

I recently bought a 2004 Wrangler Rubicon with 58,000 miles and a week after I took ownership, I went to start it one morning and , Nothing... not even the familuar " CLICK CLICK of the relay " Hmmmm, did I get a shot battery ? I throw a short charge on it,,, and presto... back in business. And then of course , kept an eye on it and checked out its reading with a multimeter and all seems fine in that area... reading a steady 12.8 Volts while jeep isnt running. OK,, altanator ? Doesnt seem so. Reading with the multimeter with vehicle running is a steady 14.7 even with lights and heater running for several minutes. No dimming of lights, no power outages while running. A week later... same thing happens. From no problem, to no start in an instant. This time, I jump the battery... Jeep fires up, I let it run about 5 min. Then, shut it off. Come back out in 15 min, try again, and it starts, but wont stay running unless Im gassing it to about 1,800 RPM. If I let off the gas, it dies. Wont idel, just stalls compleatly. So then... I start it once again, and this time, while Im on the throttle, I put it in gear.. off she goes and I stop it, and now its ideling fine, where it should be , at about 800 RPM. all's fine... what could be causing all of this ? I dont believe its a battery or altenator issue, unless its a wacked cable. But why the thing with it not ideling , just staling ? any ideas ?
Thanks for any input... Im not a expert and dont pretend to be. So Im looking for answers from thos of you who may know what might be going on. THANK YOU !
Colin

a weak battery that wont store electricity, time for a new one. if its an alternator problem, the time you pull off the jump cable combined with dead battery your Jeep would die instantly.
however the second time sounds like an alternator problem. Id check if the alternator has good connection, also check the battery connection too.

A dead battery will cause the computer to erase or rather "forget" its idle settings causing your idle problems...and until it relearns it (usually a couple restarts with a charged battery), it will have a funky idle...or won't idle at all.

Before you replace your battery... unhook your cables, get a terminal brush and clean the terminals real good as well as the connectors on the cables, then make sure to tighten them down good and tight. If the problem still exists, replace your battery.

The only reason I'm not leaning toward the battery as the primary culprit yet (and instead thinking bad cable) is I'd think you'd still get at least a click or something when you try to start it...and if you didn't, I'd think you'd need to charge it a little while before it'd fire up. The symptoms you describe sound more like a loose/bad battery connection to me.
