i have a quarter size dent in one of my shocks. will this affect the performance or ride characteristics of the shock?

it can, depending on the depth of the dent. Do you get full range of travel from the shock?

You should be fine, but post a good picture of it and we'll tell you for sure.

Location of the dent your talking about.......

Is it on a rear shock and facing the spring pad on the axle???

My question is: Are they oil shocks (yeah, unlikely) or gas charged?

You can easily see oil shock leaking while the nitrogen charged ones may leak without any outward sign.

As long as the shock still travels without binding and isn't leaking, no issues.

So, does the shock still travel?

And, is it leaking?

Try the ole' bounce check...compare each corner and give each corner a good bounce with your body weight and see if that corner bounces more than others. It won't be much, but should be enough to tell.

Pics would help too.
