diagnosing noise drivetrain

Ok upon further driving of my new to me 97 tj 4.0 5spd 100k. I am going to describe the noise as best i can.

The noise is rough sounding non high pitched noise, almost grinding noise.
It occurs when the car is coasting (least loud).
Not very noticeable when accelerating.
It makes the most noise when decelerating in gear.
the noise gets much quieter when i push clutch in, but is definitely audible.
Dont know if it matters but my car is hard to get in gear when it warms up?

My question, is where do I start diagnosing the issue.
Had a mechanic do a quick diagnosis he did not have much time
put it on a lift and said the noise is coming from the rear part of the car, not the front.

I am new to Jeeps and am not sure where to start.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I think I had the same noise, but coming from my front. I sprayed some wd-40 on the junction where the front driveshaft enters the front diff. The noise immediately stopped. Ive been driving for a week like this and the noise hasnt returned. I am positive there is a better way to deal with the problem, but it worked for me. hope this helps.

Wd 40?

1002 fixes?
Anyone else have any input, could it be that simple?

do the driveshafts always turn the same amount of revolutions regardless of whether the clutch is depressed or not?

I have been having the same EXACT issue...just started today actually. can only hear it when at 5th or 4th gear. loud when i decelerate in gear and when coasting in neutral in 4th or 5th. did you ever figure out what it was? i just got a suspension lift installed...I'm hoping that wasn't a factor in the noise.

Anyone figure this out? Mine started today about 100 miles after a front and rear axle swap.....150 miles from my source of help to fix it and I'm afraid to drive it like this.
