Different Gears

If I get a Ford 8.8 rear axle and put 4.88 gears in and put it on the Jeep, will I be able to drive W/O 4.88 gears in the front for awhile until I get the cash?? Not going into 4WD or anything??

Thanks

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Unless you remove the front driveshaft

Absolutely, yes you can without problem. The front axle is disconnected internally inside the TJ's transfer case when you're in 2wd and so long as you remain in 2wd, there's not a problem at all. There is absolutely positively no need to remove the front driveshaft... none, nada. Just stay out of 4wd as you said.

ok. sweet, I was hoping I could. lol, now are you sure? because that's a 50/50 from 2 people but I thought I could since I'll be in 2WD..

The thing is.. If the rear axle is spinning faster, since the gears, wouldn't that mess up the front? Just wondering

Ditto. 2WD will work fine. If you put it into 4WD without regearing the front though, your jeep WILL eat itself rather spectacularly

I personally would not take that chance. That is why I had said no. Sheot happens and if for some reason it gets into 4wd, its all over.

Yup, you'll be ok in 2wd and if you get stuck for some reason then pretend you don't have 4wd and get a pull. I mean how long 'is awhile'?

If it is quite a while then yea it makes sense to do it all at once so you can use that Jeep like you should!

I dunno about your rig but in the number of 4x4 rigs I've driven over the past 40 years, not a one of them has ever shifted into 4x4 on its own.
