I and a 05 Wrangler X with a 6.0 automatic. It is lifted 3" with 32 in tires. My differential is bad but need to know what is currently in there to replace it. I am also wondering what gears that it has. Also, what is the best gearing for mileage?
It is doubtful that everything that is part of the differential is bad, can you get some help in determining which parts specifically are bad? The main parts to a differential are two small spider gears and two small side gears... all four of which are very inexpensive & quickly/easily replaced by a competent mechanic.
This is not something we can diagnose, you are going to have to get it looked at by a mechanic. He'll have to pull the axle's differential cover to look inside to see what is wrong.
You need to understand what diffs you have? I would not drive any longer. Pull the diff cover to drain gear oil and inspect. Can take pics to get advice. At this point, seems like not sure the culprit?
Ya its hard to help diagnose a "clank" without pictures, video, or more info. Just about everything on a jeep can clank if there is something wrong...not just a differential.
$$$-wise, you would probably be far better off going to a 4x4 shop that does work on Jeeps. Most are used to working on Jeep axles since so many offroaders want different ratio ring & pinion gears or lockers installed & they are pretty competitive.
Many axle shops see nothing but know-nothings who are desperate & may be expecting higher bills than a Jeeper in a 4x4 shop having similar work performed would be.
