you have to remove teh diff cover to drain the diff.
then you can push the plug out from the rear side of the cover.

Ok-I was thinking that this rubber plug was my inspection hole since I just need to inspect and possibly top off.

Through this small hole you canīt see much off the diff. You can only feel if there is enough fluid in there.

How old is your diff fluid? When did you change it the last time? If you really want to inspect the whole diff parts, remove the diff cover. cheap mineral 80W90 diff fluid donīt cost very much.

So if all I want to do is feel to see if enough fluid is in there, is needle nose pliers to pull it out and a light hit with a hammer to re install it the best way?

Pry it off with a small screwdriver. Stick you finger in. If you feel fluid, it is fine. No need for a hammer. Just push it back in.
